Word, I just figured we'd start clean. Review, discuss, argue, make stop-motion matches with your Classics.... whatever.

Chikara April 22, 2007 "Rey de Voladores"
Chikara Nov. 18, 2006 "Talent Borrows ; Genius Steals"

IWA Mid-South July 2, 2005 "No Blood No Guts No Glory 2005"
IWA Mid-South June 11, 2005 "Something To Prove"
IWA Mid-South May 6, 2005 "Dedication"

Reviews to follow the dots...

-Talent Borrows ; Genius Steals
The opener with Los Ice Creams sucked. Chuck Taylor [who is becoming one of my new favorites on the indies] against Ricochet was a light, fun match. Lance Steel/Trik Davis was terrible, crowd was really quiet. Quack/Storm vs. Fist was good, really nothing out of the ordinary though. The knees of Akuma caught Storm hard in the chest at the end of his 450.
Kingston/Sweeny's strap match was good, crowd was in and out of it which hurt it, all in all a good show, but nothing to scramble to get.

-No Blood, No Guts, No Glory:
Highlight of the show is easily the Punk/Delirious match [Punk's last in IWA:MS]. 60 full minutes of hilarity and all in all greatness.
Jacobs/Sydal for the title, Brave/Black/Davis flippy match, and everything in between really nice stuff, nothing great, but not bad either. Punk/Delirious easily the show stealer.

-Something to Prove:
Was a really good show. The entire card was very solid, everything from Abercrombie/Delirious [crowd was pretty dead] to Homicide/Punk [which is pretty much what you would expect].
The tables match drug along due to Fannin's ridiculously long promo mid match. All that aside, the Necro/Joe match is what everyone talks about in regards to this show. Its everything youve heard and then some. The crowd is really into it which helps a lot.

Purchasing... the last Classics I got were the HBK/Razor Ladder match two pack, and I think Vader and Lawler from Andrew. I also just got the Cena/Khali 2 pack, and Khali is proudly hoisting the World title upside down above his head.

I also recently ordered the AWA dvd/shirt combo, and the Hardcore Straight Edge Punk shirt from Shopzone.

From ROH I just bought both Weekend of Champions shows, and the program/poster from their recent Japan tour.

I just recently broke into 2006 in my ROH watching:

Hell Freezes Over is very good. I highly enjoyed the era of Rave/Shelley as a team, esp. here vs Claudio... ugh, and Azriel. Joe vs Whitmer is good, I even liked Styles vs Sydal and Daniels vs Lethal. Then of course, Hero vs Danielson was awesome. Maybe not as good as their IWA stuff, but it's still a very solid match.

After that is Tag Wars 2006, which I was there live for, and I hated for multiple reasons then... and in watching back, it really wasn't that great of a show. I hate too many tag and 6 man matches... and the Embassy vs GenNext Lite wasn't nearly as good as the one from two Dayton shows earlier. Meh...

I also recently watched a 5 disc comp on the WCW feud of Ricky Steamboat and Steve Austin... which covered their TV title feud, along with the Dangerous Alliance vs Sting and buddies, the Hollywood Blondes vs Steamboat and Douglas, and their US title feud.

Highlights included a War Games match I had never seen, Flair/Austin vs Sting/Steamboat, and a decent 6 man from a house show with the Blondes/Rude vs Sting/Steamboat/Scorpio

speaking of Cactus mark. I have been watching ECW TV from 1995 and Cactus from that era is so damn good. His interveiws are some of the best ever. There is one where he is dressed up and shows how he is "hardcore" by trying to put a pen behind his missing ear, put on glasses, and floss between his missing teeth with the mic cord. classic

Foley cut some classic promos as Cactus Jack. I really feel Foley was at his peak in ECW and was sad when he left to become Mankind. Although he did some great promos as Mankind early on.

Yea 96 mankind was great, it doesn't top 95 Cactus looking back but that was great. Even the later mankind was good, like 98-99 when he was manipulated by Vince to do whatever.

In my book nothing Foley does will top ECW Cactus Jack promos. Although I cant recall seeing the promo you mentioned earlier but can only imagine how great it is.

The promo mentioned was part of the deal ECW did a the end of the show where they just went through a bunch of guys/clips/etc at the end of the show. They cut back to him like 4 o 5 times. Gold

So I just finished watching all three nights of Chikara's Young Lions Cup 3. I was in attendance at the first, so I was curious how it was on tape.

I like Chikara... but jesus, is YLC probably the worst of the major Indy tournaments. They really need to cut it to like, 12 guys instead of 24, because a majority of them are not that great, and I can only imagine how the following years have been.

All of the non-tourney matches were good, because every night had a 6 or 8 man with Hero, Claudio, Cannon, Quack, Jigsaw, etc etc... but yeah, the tournament itself is lacking. I was also disappointed with this Cheech/Cloudy vs Turner/Franco match that everyone goes dicks over, but I found to be stupid.

And of course... spoiler... Shane Storm wins the tourney. If there is any worker that I can look at and KNOW I could wrestle, it's Shane Storm. 5'6, 230 of non-athleticism. Horrible. I also like how people have claimed the finals was such an atmosphere, like the fans were blowing the roof off... but it was totally made that way by Chikara.. which is cool, but otherwise it would have been dead silent.

Whatever.

I just watched Chikara: Negative Balance, August of 2005

It's in the ECW arena, I believe the first half a double header with CZW, so they busted out some "Chikara classics" to showcase the product, like Darkness Crabtree, CP Munk, Ken the Box, etc... take that for what you will. I did like the addition of the second Lance Steel though... but their match wasn't great.

There are some... just all out bad matches on this show. Sume Sukie vs Allison Danger is horrid; FIST vs Skayde/Equinox is beyond bad, and I can do without Cheech/Cloudy vs Turner Franco again. There was also a decent match with Sweeney/Hallowicked vs Storm/Jigsaw... not great, but not bad

Reasons to watch this tape.... Cannon vs Reckless Youth was good. Claudio vs Quackenbush started awesome, and ended up being kinda short, but still very good. Hero vs a returning Kingston was stiff, and very good. This really gets me wanting to watch all their CZW stuff, but I sure don't want to buy a years worth of their DVDs. I really like King though... he's a Top 5 guy of the Indys for me. As bad as the TPI this year looks, I pray they let these two have a match somewhere in the tourney.

Just finished watching the Legends: Monday Night War round table on 24/7. I really enjoyed it, and come away liking Bischoff even more. I got annoyed with Hayes, he talked/interrupted everyone way to much. some highlights....
Bischoff talking about how no one in the NWO could work except Hall, and that was about 2% of the time
Calling out Lawler that Hall/Nash were in WCW before WWE
JR calls Tony Shavonie a Hamenager(sp)

I would have to say the best Legends to date

Good Times, Great Memories:
Amazing opener with the Chikara guys, crowd was really into it.
Christopher Daniels/Erick Stevens was a little short, but still nice. Daniels ended with a farewell/fuck you promo that was insanely great. The 4 way was mostly a Homicide/Whitmer showcase, somewhat surprise ending. Aries/Reyes, another good match, really great sequence of false finishes and plenty of stiff kicks.
Morishima/Shingo, well, it was defiantly puro, I'm not much into it, but I know a lot of folks are.. decent nonetheless. Tank/Payne is a squash, but sets up Dempsey as Tank's protege. Evans/Strong is pretty much what you would think.. Jack flips, gets stretched, Strong does some backbreakers and chops, you know the rest.
Youve heard the hype for the MCMG/Briscoes match, well, its all true. All four of the guys were on point which made for a really great match.
Cabana/Scrap Daddy, pretty much the basic farewell match. Nothing special, nothing over the top during the match, but still good. After the match, Pearce spits in Cabana's face and then the celebration starts.

All in all its one of those classic, must have dvds.

ROH: Unscripted II

Huge snowstorm outside, a bunch of guys didn't make it to the show, and some guys who did got in trouble from TNA because they were told not to go. So the entire card is up in the air.... which leads to the gimmick.

`Opening matches, not great.
`Aries vs Nigel for the Pure title is very good... better than I expected.
`Xavier comes back to get beat by Danielson. Blah
`A 4 corner with Jimmy Yang and three bums actually turns out pretty good, considering.
`Whitmer vs Strong is also not bad. I really like BJ. It's weird that I just watched this... and I really don't remember much from it. That's probably not good.
`The main has Pearce and Rave vs Danielson and... a returning CM Punk. The match starts suuuper slow and almost loses me, but it picks up and it's decent, not spectacular. Post match has a 15 minute promo by Punk basically tearing a guy in the crowd apart for calling him a Sellout. Then he runs outside in the blizzard and does snow angels in his gear. Wow.

Overall, not a great show, but I am a Punk mark so I needed to get it.

I'm blazing through ROH dvds lately:

ROH: 4th Anniversary DVD

`The Briscoes return! Not roided out monsters like they are now, but still sweet to see them back, beating on some scrubs
`Good 4 corner match, with antics by Claudio and Pearce. Not so much with Jay Fury and Azrieal.
`Samoa Joe vs Lethal, not bad, but I really an not a Jay Lethal fan
`Daniels vs Whitmer gets interrupted by CZW, with Hero singing "Happy Birthday, Fuck You" to ROH. Sweet. Then Joe comes outto brawl with Hero... I don't think that match ever happened in ROH, did it? Also in this brawl, the Bricsoes jump Aries/Strong. Nice
`That brawl leads into Homicide vs Cabana, which is a brawl that gets stopped three times, but Cabana keeps getting up and calling Homicide back. I liked that feud. That whole segment -- the match into the brawl into this match -- is something I would normally hate on, but I liked how it all flowed together.
`Bryan Danielson shows why he is the best ROH champion ever. His match with Jimmy Rave is very good, and like all of his defenses, you feel that he could really lose the belt to anyone. I also love how Rave's gimmick is to steal everyone's finishers.
`Black Hole of Charisma vs Flippy Botched-Spot McGuillicutty with Ricky Reyes vs Jack Evans. Blah
`Aries/Strong vs Styles/Sydal in the main... slow start, picks up eventually. Good match, not great, it's hard to get into a face vs face, BFF tag match... although I do like the GenNext team as champs, and headlining shows. Briscoes come out again, jump the champs, leading to some title defenses in the future.

Overall, a very good show. I recommend it, and I give it... 4 potatoes out of 5.

CZW's Dishonorable Conduct-
Joker/Ryan McBride was pretty shitty.
Ricky Reyes and CJ O'Doyle was okay at best.
Jon Dahmer vs. Danny Demanto was so sloppy, some of the spots were hard to watch and almost scary.
Derek Frazier vs. Ricochet was actually ok, I enjoy Ricochet's flippy shit from time to time.
DJ Hyde/Monsta Mack was exactly what you would expect. Slow, heavy and not really good at all. Mack did do a plancha though which was odd.
Staple Gun Match - Danny Havoc vs. Dustin Lee was pretty good for what it was. Creative spots, not too bad overall.
Ruckus vs. Homicide, the match that should have been the show stealer was the biggest disappointment. Really sketchy and just got worse as it went. Not even 10 minutes. Turned into a tag match, I couldn't get into it.
Team AnDrew vs. Chuck Taylor & Cheech wasnt anything special. I dont like AnDrew or Cheech.
The ladder match sucked.
The 3-way, four corners match was bad
Brain Damage and Drake Younger was decent for a deathmatch.

Im glad I didnt buy it. Crowd seems pretty dead, alot of wrestlers waiting for their spots. Its so obvious it really takes you out of it, and it happens more than once in a match. Also the announcing is horrid. Makes you long for the days of John House.

*Edit
I just realized, Billy Bob in my sig looks almost like I feel about the show.. odd.

ROH: Arena Warfare

ROH's first time in the ECW Arena, first half of a double header with CZW.

`Tag Scramble to start... and The Briscoes actually kinda fuck it up. This match will not be on my "Man Up" Compilation DVD
`Jimmy Yang vs Roddy Strong is decent, but short.
`Whitmer calls out CZW, Necro Butcher complies. Super Dragon also comes out, and I get legit scared.
`Aries vs Sydal in the "I love you GenNext partner" match is good, but not as good as I think I would expect. I like Sydal, I respect how good he is... but I really don't enjoy watching him all that often.
`Irish Airborne (who... either have their team name misspelled on their tights, or ROH's dvd cover is spelled wrong) beats Rinaro/Mamaluke in a decent match.
`Danielson vs Shelley... God I wish Alex Shelley had more title matches, esp. against Dragon. If it wasn't Aries, I think Shelley totally could have turned, beaten Joe for the title, and been fine. He really is the man. When this match started, I noticed the counter at 50 minutes. Wow, so good! But the first 25 is both guys just shitting on the CZW crowd, which is actually really funny. Danielson threatens to punch a little girl in the mouth, Shelley calls a guy gay, and so on. The match is about 25, and it starts slow as shit, but it picks up and I enjoy it greatly. Lots of good counters and submission holds, but the crowd really puts a damper on the match. This could have been the 5 star classic, but it never got off the ground.
`The three way main event is a clusterfuck because Samoa Joe is late, so it's Cabana vs Danielson for 15, then Joe faces the winner for like, 5... if that. It was real weird, and I wonder how it was originally going to go. Anyways, Joe wins, Whitmer comes out to challenge CZW again, and gets the royal beatdown by everyone.

Now I question.... do I watch the next ROH dvd, or should I really watch the CZW show from later that night first? We'll see.

Overall, it's an important show to the feud/year, but not the best show I have seen by any stretch.
